  • Tip #6 Spring

    Spring time yard attention.

-Create a “LEAN, CLEAN and GREEN ZONE” by removing all flammable vegetation within 30 feet immediately surrounding your home

-Create a “REDUCED FUEL ZONE” in the remaining 70 feet, or to your property line.

    -Landscape with fire resistant plants

-When clearing vegetation, use care when operating equipment such as lawnmowers. One small spark caused by the blade hitting a rock can start a big fire. A string trimmer is much safer. If you must mow, do so only in the morning when temperatures are low, the air is still, and the fuel is still damp with dew.

-Remove all stacks of construction materials, pine needles, leaves, and other debris from your yard

    Spark Arrester Safety

-It's that time of year when we head to the “hills” to enjoy nature and get away from the heat and city life.

-Check to make sure your ATV has a working spark arrester

-Check your chainsaw for a working spark arrester

-Check your generator to make sure it has a working spark arrester, and make sure you operate your generator is in an area that is cleared of flammable material

Are you thinking about spring and cleaning up the yard? Now would be a good time to check your gas powered equipment.

    -Spark arrester in working order?

-Debris removed from around the engine?

    -Bearings greased?

The Santa Fe County Fire Wildland Division was created from a CFRP (Collaborative Forest Restoration Program) grant awarded to the fire department in 2004. With additional grant funding this wildland division has set out to address recommendations set forth in the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) .

The Santa Fe Community Wildfire Protection Plan (SFC CWPP) addresses the hazards and risks of wildland fire throughout Santa Fe County and makes recommendations for fuels reduction projects, public outreach and education, structural ignitability reduction, and fire response capabilities. Some of the recommendations for this plan include more than 55 fuels reduction projects; public education and outreach directed at homeowners to help them prepare for wildland fire through events like pre-planned triages; strategies for fire responders to improve their capabilities through improved communication, professional training, and equipment; and the reduction of structural ignitability by providing public education on defensible space.
